The UK Hip Hop movement right now is stronger
than ever before and one artist in particular is
delivering music for the masses with style simply
his own. Genesis Elijah is one of the UK’s biggest
rising artist with many highly anticipating the
release of his new material. So for DA STREET
BUZZ’ first UK interview, we bring you Genesis
Elijah
DSB: For those unfamiliar give us a breakdown
of who Genesis Elijah is and what he represents?
GENESIS ELIJAH: I'm just a man with a dream
ha ha ha! I'm just fucking with you. I'm just an
average dude. I represent the educated road
mans. I'm the type than can tell your all about the
drug game, gun game and the pimp game but we
can also converse on subjects ranging from the
Nephilim to the Philadelphia experiment. If you
don't know step your knowledge game up.
DSB: How would you define your musical style?
GENESIS ELIJAH: I wouldn't. My style depends on what mood I'm in. Sometimes its raw sometimes it's laid back, sometimes
I'm deep and sometimes I chat shit.
DSB: You have been writing rhymes since the tender age of 11 but it was your teens before you started to get heavily
involved within the UK Hip Hop scene, how do you feel you have developed as an artist over the years?
GENESIS ELIJAH: I've developed as a person and as we all know art imitates life. When you're younger you're more hung
up on what people think of you plus your still finding out who you are so your rhymes reflect that. Now days I really don't give
a fuck about what people think and I know who I am so my rhymes reflect that. I say what I wanna say.
DSB: There is a lot of talent within the UK right now, who for you is standing out from the crowd?
GENESIS ELIJAH: Right now I'm really feeling Sway. Kano and Dizzee been doing their things. There's a lot of young guys
coming up in the ranks including myself but to be honest unless they're really doing their thing I won't hear about them cos I
don't listen to the radio or watch music television.
DSB: If you were offered the chance to collaborate with any Rapper out there, who would that person be and why?
GENESIS ELIJAH: ANY rapper? I have to say Eminem and let me explain why. Not only has he got skills but he's still the
biggest rapper on the planet and if I played my cards right and chose the right kind of track that would put my career into
overdrive.
DSB: Do you feel there is enough support out there for independent artists like yourself?
GENESIS ELIJAH: There isn't a lot of support but it's not impossible to make it. I guess the support we receive is relative to
the size of the market. It makes no sense in someone putting money into a business that’s not going to see a return or make
a significant profit. Like any business, success depends on market share. In our case that's people who buy UK hip hop and
as we're dealing with a small market our job as business men and women is to grab as much of that market share as
possible by promoting ourselves. When we become viable businesses then we'll get more support cos the only that pisses
rich people off is seeing other people make money without them.
DSB: The UK Hip Hop Scene is very much unlike that of our American counter parts, why do you think the vibe and feel of
UK music is so different?
GENESIS ELIJAH: We're different. Look at our films and our comedy. Our humor’s different. We're more down to earth and
straight to the point so of course our music reflects that.
DSB: You have performed alongside some big names in Hip Hop including the legendary KRS-1, GZA, Black Twang,
Semtex and many more, Is it fair to say the stage is your home? How did it feel performing alongside the likes of KRS-1?
GENESIS ELIJAH: Yeah that's when I'm most at home. I've been doing shows for 10 years now and I've always had good
experiences. Meeting KRS was a big deal. I grew up listening to him and he's still a big influence on what I do now, so to be
able to have even a brief conversation with him was a great honor. I gave him a CD and I do wonder if he ever listened to it.
DSB: Your first release “Deh Pon Road” back in 2005 was a big hit, did you expect such recognition from it?
GENESIS ELIJAH: Nah not really. I just wanted to get myself heard and Imz (Who was running the label Broken Souls)
helped me put a few songs I already had with some new ones we made it and got it out. I still get people telling me that's
their favorite album. I can't listen to it myself but I really appreciate the love it gets.
DSB: Your Mix-tape “Industrial Revolution” has sold more than 6,000 units independently. I personally love the Mix-tape! For
those who may not have heard it give us a run down of it’s content?
GENESIS ELIJAH: Thank you. It's really just me spitting. I kind of wanted to just show people I could be lyrical. The concept
behind it is "Do it yourself". I called it The Industrial Revolution cos I was really trying to show that the industry has changed
and there's no need get pimped like we used to. We're getting our own money now.
DSB: You are currently working on your LP, what can the fans expect from it?
GENESIS ELIJAH: Well the new mixtape The Hustlers Prayer's coming first and it's only a year late. I've got quite a few little
projects on the way before I do a proper album so just keep your eyes open. If you are a fan of my music please don't just
expect more of the same. Allow me to grow.
DSB: Working so hard obviously must not leave much free time for you, when you do catch a break how do you like to just
kick back and relax?
GENESIS ELIJAH: My thing's are Television and PS3. I'll complete any game you put in front of me. I love driving and
shooting games. My favorite TV shows at the moment include The Mighty Boosh, Family Guy, King of Queens (If you don't
know get to know) and My Wife and Kids. Most days if I get home early I'll put my daughter to bed then me and my girl just
chill watching TV. That’s how I relax.
DSB: Any Shout’s?
GENESIS ELIJAH: I just wanna shout out my manager Nina Carmela cos she's the only reason my name's still out here. This
is our year sis. Watch! God is love. Blessings.
