DSB: How did you get started with your music?
BIG J: I’ve put out a DVD series with over 40 volumes since 98'
when I was 17 (Caliswangin.com) and I've dealt with a lot of artist
projects doing music production on my soundtracks. By developing
a relationship with the artist it brought me closer to the game, next
thing I knew I was in studios everyday hangin out till one day in 04' I
was like this shit is easy I can do this. I asked the homie to let me do
a song and the rest was history. That’s how I hooked up with
Jellyroll, he would stop by the studio, one day he heard me rippin
niggaz up and seen the talent. It also didn’t hurt that I had a pretty
strong rep in the streets.
DSB: What are you currently working on?
BIG J: The hottest shit you ever heard, hahaha Naw I got two mix
tapes bout to hit the streets that are going to make a big buzz. "Get
Use to Me vol.1" mixed by D.J. Def Tone (Cali Untouchables) the
"Cash Flow" Mixtape. Ye real masterpiece is my Debut Album
"CHEVY MUSIC" its about to shut down everything!!!!!! WATCH
DSB: What kind of music do you listen to and how does it influence your music?
BIG J: I'M OPEN TO ALL TYPES OF MUSIC. OF COURSE RAP, but as Gangsta as my music is I listen to a lot of R&B
and oldies. The reason I listen to a lot of soul music is it helps clear my head when it’s over crowed with rap ideas and I
need to start fresh. People don’t know I have ghostwritten for some of projects you’re listening to, but due to contracts I
can’t say who exactly, just know your rappin my shit and don’t even know! Oh yeah, I got some Soul hits under my belt.
Wait till you hear the Jellyroll Project!!!
DSB: What's your opinion on mainstream music today? What do you like or not like?
BIG J: I don’t really have one! Music is Universal, "IT'S NOT FOR EVERYBODY, BUT ITS FOR SOMEBODY" meaning
just cause you don’t like it someone else loves it. So I say do you!!!! Shake ya Laffy Taffy...
DSB: Who do you admire?
BIG J: The real O.G.s of the Game the real CEOs Russell Simmons, Master P, Ice Cube, J Prince, E-40, the cats that
broke the mold and showed young brothers hop to really get that bread, and stay with it.
DSB: Why would people want to listen to your music over someone else's?
BIG J: No B.S. my shit is crazy!!!! It’s for street cats, real street cats! You listen to my music and you hear my words,
you know what I'm saying to you isn't something I seen in a movie. When I come across and you’re real like I am, you’ll
hear something you can relate to. You think to yourself this guy must have really been through this situation to speak
so first hand on it, if you fake the funk and don’t really know the streets some of my Lyrics might pass right over your
head! Big J is more then just gangsta rap. I also got those joints to make the women dance in the club and I got joints
for my cats who love those cars "CHEVY MUSIC"
DSB: Who have you worked with and how have they affected your work?
BIG J: Man I got production on my project from Heat Chambers, Jellyroll, Blaqtoven, Lil Jon, Rick Rude, and I'm really
just getting started. I recently just did a show at the Key Club on L.A.'s Sunset strip; The Show was with Twista, Dub C,
Pop-n-Bullets, Strong Arm Steady, and my Gain Green Fam! That was a big deal, It got me hyped I'm ready to rip down
stages!!!!!
DSB: What suggestions do you have for other artists in the music industry?
BIG J: Always be forward, but stay humble. The biggest thing you cant be lazy! Making the songs is the easy part of
the game its marketing and getting those spins is what I'm focused on! So you got to be a grinda', be ready to push
your project like you r life depends on it. No one can promote your product better than you!
DSB: Where do you see yourself in a year from now?
BIG J: Damn. A year from now, I promise you I will have one of the hottest buzzes in southern Cali, that’s goes for New
artist, old artist who ever. You either Fuckin wit me or you not, and If you not I feel sorry for ya. BIG J AKA Mr. Cali
